Dina Shaker is the Egyptian Label Deconstructing Tailoring
One of many brands at the forefront of Egypt’s design renaissance
Egyptian design is having a major moment. Thanks to accessories label Okhtein and streetwear brand Ohanna, local designers are making an impressive mark on the global fashion industry. One of the ready-to-wear brands stood firmly in the spotlight of this Egyptian design renaissance is Dina Shaker’s eponymous label.
The designer’s fashion career started just over a decade ago when she founded high street retail chain Spicy. Not long after the 2011 revolution, the local market tanked, but despite the shortfall, Shaker became more determined than ever to create her own label.
Today Shaker exclusively runs her homegrown brand, which launched with her Spring/Summer 17 collection and has since gone on to show at Fashion Forward Dubai and is now worn by the who’s who of the region like Dima Al Sheikhly and The Abduls.
Shaker has become known for her signature deconstructed tailoring. Using technical knowledge she learned through her experience in retail, the designer reworks classic pieces, from blazers to trench coats, incorporating unusual materials and innovative cuts.
