Few have made it to the highest echelons of the music industry as young as Britney Spears, but if there’s anything to learn from her journey it’s that fame can be a double edge sword.

To bring light to the pop star’s journey, a documentary has been released early this month and, charting everything from her meteoric rise to fame to her disturbing fallout in 2007 and beyond. Framing Britney Spears comes with a carefully-selected series of interview footage and commentary that raise questions about mental health and misogyny in the entertainment industry.

Thanks to OSN, it’s coming to the region. The New York Times documentary is now available on the UAE-based network’s streaming app.

Framing Britney Spears follows the singer’s struggles with the toxic media treatment she was exposed to. For years, the singer spent her days chased by hundreds of photographers, at the centre of countless rumours, and her mental health always put to question.

This all came to a head in 2007,  after the singer publicly shaved her head and was eventually involuntarily committed to a hospital psychiatric ward. The documentary contexulises the incident, and delves into what led her father Jamie Spears to petition the court to become a temporary conservator after that – a conservatorship that became permanent under the allegations that she had early onset dementia.

The documentary comes after the rise of a #FreeBritney movement that was sparked in 2019 after news broke that Britney was being held in a psychiatric facility against her will.

Since the documentary’s release, fans’ support for the movement only grew further, and her conservatorship battle against her father returned to American courts.
