This year’s Frieze New York—the eighth edition to date— runs from May 3 until May 5 and sees more than 200 contemporary art galleries from 30 countries head to Randall’s Island. Among the blue chip and emerging galleries, Dubai’s The Third Line is the only regional gallery to be exhibiting, and brings together works by Iranian and Arab women artists Hayv Kahraman, Laleh Khorramian, Monir Farmanfarmaian, Pouran Jinchi and Sara Naim.
All residing or having spent time in America, each artist offers an exploration of the links between migration and identity, reflecting on their experiences of diaspora; be it through practice, medium or subject matter.
Iranian artist Monir Farmanfarmaian—who sadly passed away on April 20—also has a series of illustrative interpretations of her renowned mosaics on display for the first time.
Fellow Iranian artist Pouran Jinchi will also have her meticulously minimalist work on display. Her practice serves as a conversation between different genres and references, such as calligraphy, writing, drawing and painting, trough which she pushes the limits of abstraction to explore the ways military aesthetics have saturated our visual perceptions.
Iraqi artist Hayv Kahraman’s paintings explore her obsession with female figures to describe the struggle of displacement. While Syrian artist Sara Naim, and Iranian artist Laleh Khorramian both adopt a more abstract and experimental approach: Naim’s work questions the notion of boundaries, while Khorramian uses the idea of spectacle as a starting point, combining it with multiple mediums like personal drawings and animations to explore aspects of human nature and emotional states of consciousness.
