Dubai’s Mountain Region is the New Go-To Vacation Spot

Hatta is getting a serious eco-tourism makeover

The Emirates have seen a rise in eco-tourism as of late, with the lux but environmentally-friendly Kingfisher Lodge having opened in Khor Kalba and initiatives encouraging hotels to go the green path —the gulf nation is definitely well on its way to reducing its carbon footprint.

And from the looks of it, the nation’s eco-tourism industry is only set to grow. Dubai-based holding giant Meraas just announced its plans for major projects in Hatta, which is all geared to boost the nation’s eco-friendly efforts.

About 130 kilometres south of Dubai, Hatta is known for its beautiful (and wild) mountainous landscapes. It’s already a popular destination for the outdoorsy type, but with what Meraas is setting in motion, the area is bound to become everyone’s go-to weekend destination.

First to come is a giant Hollywood-esque Hatta sign at the peak of the Hajar Mountains. An interactive information centre is also set to open with readily available tour guides to walk you through the mountains and Hatta’s old village.

But for those looking for a mountain retreat, you’ll be happy to hear their plans for an idyllic mountain lodge, complete with 20 rooms, is perfect for a quiet nature-filled getaway.

If you’re into a more rugged kind of retreat, the plans also include camp sites where you’ll be able to rent out airstream trailers overlooking the banks of the Hatta dam.

The project is set to begin its first phase by the end of this year and comes as part of the 10-year Hatta Development plan set in motion by HH Shekh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum
