An Artist’s Guide to Bahrain

A young Bahraini illustrator gives us the lowdown

Bahrain-based 23-year old illustrator Duaa Jamal Al-Aamer started experimenting with art on Photoshop in November 2017, as a way to raise awareness about gender inequality in the region.

Through her illustrations she’s created a parallel universe where alien-like women roam free in their own cosmic galaxy of equality. By drawing “alien chicks”, Jamal Al-Aamer celebrates the strength of women by highlighting them as extra-terrestrial creatures.

MILLE caught up with the young artist to find out her favourite spots to eat, hang and check out art.

Saffron

I suggest trying Saffron for a traditional breakfast in Souq Muharraq. A few historic houses have been transformed into art and music museums in that area. It’s a great place to visit if you want to learn more about Bahrain’s history and culture.

Grind and 55 Old Street

My two favourite places for coffee. I particularly love their industrial decor.
