We Have 3 Years to Save the World

It's time to get serious about climate change

Whether you’re an avid consumer of news, or just get your news via Instagram or Facebook – you probably already know that climate change isn’t something to be ignored.

If you still haven’t already considered it to be a serious global crisis, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has issued one of the most extensive reports on the subject to date. The 33 page report—which was addressed to policymakers across the globe— emphasized the urgency of keeping the rise of temperature below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The report has been described as a final warning on the dangers of global warming. According to climate change expert and former Vice-President of the IPPC Jean Jouzel, we only have three years left to save ourselves from a climatic catastrophe.

The report comes at a time when the subject of climate change reached the centre of political debates all across the globe. Last year, United States President Donald Trump sent shockwaves around the world by withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement despite scientific reports warning against his decision.

And more recently, the far-right front-runner for Brazil’s presidential elections has openly expressed his desire to also pull out of the climate treaty—a decision that could steer the world even further from achieving the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

While the report was aimed at influencing policymakers like Donald Trump or Brazil’s presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro, it also urges individuals to make lifestyle changes, particularly dietary changes.

“”You might say you don’t have control over land use, but you do have control over what you eat and that determines land use” says Debra Roberts, IPCC’s co-chair.
