The Sharjah Exhibition Putting Local Photographers in the Spotlight

Vantage Point is boosting the local art scene

Over the last decade, thanks to the efforts of artist, curator (and daughter of Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Sharjah’s current ruler) Hoor Al-Qasimi, the emirate of Sharjah has solidified itself as a major player in the Middle Eastern art world.

Since the establishment of The Sharjah Art foundation in 2009, the foundation has put under the spotlight a host of artists from around the region. And since 2013, they’ve been putting a particular focus on photographers from around the GCC in their annual exhibition entitled Vantage Point Sharjah.

Now in their sixth edition, photographers from all across the region have been invited to showcase their own interpretation of the theme ‘Performance”. Which according to them could be “embodied in a gesture, movement or action, or it can be documented through the traces of a past presence or time.”

After an overwhelming response from applicants following an open call that took place for two-months, the showcase features artists of varying backgrounds, from professionals to amateurs—all in the name of expanding the art photography in the region.

The exhibition will be on view at Gallery 1 at Al Mureijah Square until September 8th.
