Long gone are the days when we’d rush home after school to switch on MBC, Rotana, or MTV to see what our favorite artists had cooked up for their latest single release. These days, especially in the era of digital streaming, music videos occupy a much smaller place in the industry. They arrive with little to no fanfare before quickly being sliced into short TikTok bits and eventually get swallowed by the algorithm before the week is even over.
Once considered essential, they’re now often treated as an optional add-on to a song rather than a defining part of its success—a marketing asset designed to generate a few extra clicks and satisfy a few egos rather than signal where an artist’s head is at both sonically and visually. Which is a shame, because there was a time when a great music video could completely change the way you heard a song.
Luckily, a few artists still seem interested in giving us something to actually look at. Since the start of the year, regional music listeners have been spoiled with a steady stream of visuals that go well beyond the standard performance shot and luxury-car cameo. Below, 10 music videos that made us hit the replay button more than we thought we would.
