At first glance, fashion and football seem to have little in common. One belongs to the runway, the other to the pitch. But for decades, designers have been borrowing from the beautiful game, turning jerseys, scarves, cleats, and tracksuits into high-fashion statements. So, in honor of the 2026 FIFA World Cup currently underway, we’re looking back at the times football left the field and scored big on the runway.
In Fall 2020, Balenciaga sent out an acid-bright football kit, complete with an oversized goalkeeper-style jersey, matching shorts, knee-high socks, and cleat-like shoes. Similarly, Koché’s Spring 2018 collection turned actual jerseys into slinky, asymmetric dresses, splicing club colors and sponsor graphics into something that would effortlessly transition from the stands to the after-party. Louis Vuitton later leaned into the terrace-coded side of the sport for Spring 2024, with checkerboard football shirts, baggy shorts, and matching Damier bags, while Miu Miu gave the football boot a glossy fashion makeover for spring 2021, reimagining cleats in metallic silver with a tiny heel.
