Being a Manchester United fan right now is practically a humiliation ritual. Since Sir Alex Ferguson— the club’s legendary manager of 27 years— retired in 2013, the Northern English side has endured a slow, painful decline, becoming a source of pity for rivals who don’t even take pleasure in mocking the fallen giant anymore.
For the past 12 seasons, the Red Devils have struggled to rebuild their squad back to the top of the British Premier League. Cycling through manager after manager (with each one falling short of restoring the club’s former glory) while splashing millions of pounds on marquee signings that often turn into (very) expensive disappointments, the same circle of hope and heartbreak threatens to repeat itself ahead of the next season. But amid the uncertainty, one prospect is giving fans a reason to dream again and his name is Abdulla Al-Hammadi.
The young Emirati goalkeeper was recently spotted at Carrington — Manchester United’s training ground— sitting on the bench during a friendly game against Rochdale. And although he didn’t step on the pitch during the fixture, it is understood that he’s currently on trial with the club and could potentially join them on a permanent or semi-permanent deal.
As we wait to see if that move materializes, here are a few key facts about Man U’s potential next shot-stopper.
He’s 20
Al-Hammadi was born on July 13, 2005, making him 20 years old.
He played for Al Wasl
Before trialing with Manchester United, the 20-year-old played as a goalkeeper for Dubai-based club Al Wasl; a club famously managed by the legendary Diego Maradona for a brief spell between May 2011 and July 2012.
He Was Snubbed By Other EU Clubs
His trial at Manchester United isn’t his first experience in Europe. In March, Al-Hammadi spent time with Everton, where he kept a clean sheet for the U21s in a test match against Bolton Wanderers B at their stadium. Technically, he’s the first goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at the Mersey-side’s new ground.
He’d Be the First Emirati Player for Manchester United
If the move goes through, he’d become the first Emirati player to represent Manchester United and to feature in the Premier League. Not bad for a 20-year-old if you’re asking us.
