Algeria Is Burning— Here’s How You Can Help

By now, you’ve probably seen the headlines: Algeria is, quite literally, burning. For weeks, the North African country has been grappling with a wave of wildfires. Some of the worst blazes are sweeping through its northern regions — particularly around Béjaïa, Jijel and Tizi Ouzou — where flames have burnt through vast stretches of forestland and left entire communities contending with yet another summer marked by devastating fires.

Reports suggest that at least 12 people have lost their lives in the fires so far, while many more have been displaced or forced to flee their homes as the flames continue to spread. The severity of the situation has prompted a response from the highest levels of government, with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declaring three days of national mourning while also calling for the death penalty for anyone found to have deliberately started the fires.

Wildfires are, sadly, no unfamiliar occurrence in Algeria, but the scale and persistence of the latest blazes have once again cast a rather unforgiving light on the country’s increasingly punishing summers. And, with climate change expected to make extreme heat and fire-friendly conditions across the Mediterranean increasingly frequent, there is little reason to believe the summers ahead will be any kinder.

Beyond the statistics and images of orange skies, scorched hillsides, and firefighters working around the clock are thousands of local lives facing evacuations, damaged homes and livelihoods, and landscapes that may take years to properly recover. For those watching from afar and wondering what, if anything, they can actually do to help, there are several ways to lend a hand.

One of the most straightforward ways is to support the organizations already on the ground. Several Algerian associations have launched or joined donation drives in response to the fires, collecting essentials—from food and clothing to bedding and hygiene products—before delivering them directly to affected locals.
