Calling all Studio Ghibli lovers–Rumors have it that renowned Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki is stepping out of retirement once again, and is already working on his next cinematic venture. After announcing bowing out of the silver screen industry at least three times thus far, it has been revealed that the multi-award-winning director is currently in the development process of a new project.

Speaking with Nippon media Oricon, his son Goro Miyazaki confirmed that his father is indeed working on a new film, though he remained tight-lipped about its plot, storyline, and release date.

“I’d tell him, ‘Make some for future projects. Only making them for your past stuff is boring.’ He’s making some now, though,” Miyazaki said. “I don’t know if it’ll actually be for his next film, but it’s looking like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days,” he continued.

Corroborating with Studio Ghibli’s vice-president Junichi Nishioka’s claims made a few months earlier— in which he explained that the Spirited Away filmmaker is “already coming into the office with new ideas” — the piece of news delighted fans of the legendary animator, sparking both excitement and speculation on whether this might actually be his final piece of work.

His latest release, titled The Boy and the Heron, also hit screens  following the announcement of another return from retirement. The animated fantasy film, which was considered a hit in 2023 when it came out, garnered numerous accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the BAFTA for Best Animated Film, and the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film. With that in mind, only time will tell if his next endeavor will strike gold as well.
