These Are the Best Collections From Arab Fashion Week 2022

From sustainable slides to football fields

Featuring 36 designers, Arab Fashion Week 2022, which got underway from Oct. 11 to Oct. 15, was the biggest and most successful iteration yet since the annual fashion happening’s launch in 2015. In case you missed it, read on for a quick digital synopsis of the top shows you might have missed.

Sustainability is at the core of Lebanese designer Eric Mathieu Ritter’s Beirut-based brand. Each season, the genderless label churns out an ethically-focused collection using upcycled materials, and spring 2023 “Borderline” show was no different. Models emerged from behind a screen that read “We need humanity, more than cleverness… life will be violent, and all will be lost” wearing upcycled denim paired with white cotton and sports jerseys (football fans will love these), knitted sports scarves, and a number of pieces handprinted with different visa stamps to represent the countries Ritter and his team visited.

Ibrahim Shebani is proud to be Libyan. Though he left the North African country in 2014 due to the outbreak of civil war, his heart is still firmly planted in Libya, as he constantly references his homeland through his textile art. The undiscovered beauty of Libya is present throughout his spring 2023 ready-to-wear offering, and homage to his native land, “Never Love Me Again.” Miniskirts, jackets, dresses, and tracksuits were emblazoned with a mosaic tile print to conjure the architectural treasures of Libya. Meanwhile cotton shirts printed with an Arabic phrase that translated to “Happy people #Libya” was a nod to a Tripoli storefront.

FiftyMade

UAE-based charitable label The Giving Movement known for its ultra-cozy tracksuits unveiled a new range of clothing, FiftyMade, under flashing strobe lights of a dark parking lot in d3 over the weekend. Ethical and edgy, each piece in the sports-inspired debut collection was designed in Italy from the shiny hijabs for women to the neoprene dresses. The brand also debuted its first-ever footwear collection, a pair of ultra-cozy slides made with bio-based sugarcane. The lineup was exactly the sporty-minded fantasy we were hoping for. In other words, it’s giving.

Sleiman Dayaa, fashion stylist, art director, and now a fashion designer, unveiled the first collection of his new label, Slimi Studio, and it was eye-catching, to say the least. The line was awash with psychedelia, from cut-out dresses in neon green to tailored separates in bright fuchsia. Definitely made with only the biggest risk-takers in mind (you’d have to be truly bold to rock the “Cardi set”), the collection serves as a precursor to what we can expect from Dayaa, and we’re excited to see what he does next.

Ushering in the up-coming World Cup in Doha is BHYPE, the celebrity concept brand that specializes in vintage street fashion. The label presented its spring 2023 collection in an outdoor football field with a sports-inspired lineup punctuated with the FIFA flags of the world. From tracksuits, cozy shorts, and accessories like knee-high socks, we have no doubt the offering will score with the brand’s loyal list of shoppers including Neymar Jr. and Daniel Alves.
