Burberry Pledges to Become Climate Positive by 2040

Here’s what that means

Burberry Spring Summer 2021

After the oil industry, fashion stands as the world’s second biggest polluter— and it’s high time that real changes are applied.

Last year, headlines were made when French president Emmanuel Macron announced the Fashion Pact, setting a set of goals for the industry to avert the impending climate crisis. Burberry was amongst the labels to sign the pact, and it looks like a tangible plan has finally been put in place.

The fashion house has announced its plans to become completely Climate Positive by 2040, making it the first luxury label to set such an ambitious sustainability goal. Burberry has already committed to meeting a net-zero target by 2040 last year, but its new plans will take things even further.

The new plans include the fashion house cutting emissions from its supply chain by 46 percent by 2030, and developing other projects to help other labels in their carbon journeys.

“Burberry was built upon a desire to explore nature and the great outdoors and they have remained our inspiration for more than 150 year. Drawing on this heritage of exploration and driven by our creative spirit, today, we are setting a bold new ambition: to become climate positive by 2040,” announced Marco Gobbetti, Burberry’s CEO in a statement.

“As a company, we are united by our passion for being a force for good in the world. By strengthening our commitment to sustainability, we are going further in helping protect our planet for generations to come,” he continued.

‘I have always had a very deep, emotional connection to nature. It has a power and a purity that gives you a sense of coming back to yourself and of what is really important in life. I am so proud that as a company we are making these inspiring steps to protect our beautiful planet and the future for our next generations,’ added Riccardo Tisci, Chief Creative Officer at Burberry.
