The out-of-office replies are disappearing, calendars are filling up again, and after a summer spent convincing ourselves that a tiny shoulder bag capable of holding approximately one lip gloss was perfectly practical, reality has returned. We need our laptops. We need our chargers. We need our sunglasses, notebooks, headphones, and lipsticks. Fortunately, Cartier has us covered.
Just in time for the unofficial return to real life, the French Maison has introduced a new bag inspired by one of its most recognizable jewelry collections, Clash de Cartier. The new envelope-style design borrows directly from the Clash de Cartier universe, which first arrived in 2019 and quickly became recognizable for its combination of studs, beads, and clous carrés. The collection has always played around with opposites, balancing the refinement expected from Cartier with something harder and more rebellious, and those same codes have now been translated into leather.
The pointed studs associated with Clash appear on the bag as turn-lock clasps positioned at either side, allowing its wearer to play around with the shape depending on what the day requires. Left undone, the bag becomes softer and slouchier; fastened, it takes on a sharper, more structured silhouette. Consider it the handbag equivalent of loosening your blazer once the 4 p.m. meeting is over.
It also continues a recent habit of Cartier looking to its jewelry box when designing leather goods. The Maison previously transformed the interlocking forms of its century-old Trinity collection into handbags and accessories, proving that some of its most familiar jewelry signatures can work surprisingly well at a much larger scale. With Clash, the translation feels particularly natural. The studs were already graphic enough to function as design elements beyond a bracelet or ring.
Made in Cartier’s leather workshops in Florence, the new bag comes in natural-grain leather designed to develop a patina with wear, which means it should arguably look better after being dragged through a few airports, taxis, and overly long workdays. It currently arrives in black, caramel, and burgundy, three shades sensible enough for everyday use without drifting into boring corporate territory.
Cartier’s latest design is polished enough for the office and relaxed enough for everywhere after it. Which, as everyone reluctantly opens their inbox after summer, feels particularly well timed. If we have to go back to work, we may as well have a good bag to complain about it with.
