Cinema Akil Is Offering ‘Pay What You Can’ Screenings for Anyone Stranded in the UAE

with screenings including Spirited Away and The Voice of Hind Rajab

With escalating regional tensions and recent attacks across the Gulf disrupting airspace, flights have been delayed, rerouted, or canceled altogether, leaving thousands of travelers stuck in transit in the UAE for who knows how long. But in the middle of all that, one of the city’s most beloved cultural spaces has quietly opened its doors a little wider.

Cinema Akil, the independent arthouse cinema tucked inside Dubai’s Alserkal Avenue, has launched a “Pay What You Can” ticket initiative for anyone stranded in the city and unable to pay for a film. The motive is simple: if you need somewhere to sit, breathe, and feel a little less alone, come in and grab some popcorn or a cup of chai, watch a movie, and stay awhile.

Founded by Emirati film curator Butheina Kazim in 2018, Cinema Akil was created as the UAE’s first permanent arthouse cinema. Built around the idea that film can bring people together, over the years, it has become exactly that: a gathering point for cinephiles, creatives, and anyone looking for something a little more thoughtful than the multiplex experience.

For the next little while, the cinema is starting its programming earlier to accommodate spring break crowds and anyone looking for a daytime escape. Weekday screenings begin at 10 a.m. and run until the afternoon, while weekend showings stretch a little later.

Meanwhile, the lineup is eclectic in the best way. You might find yourself watching the heartbreaking documentary The Voice of Hind Rajab, revisiting Studio Ghibli’s beloved Spirited Away, or discovering Little Amélie or The Character of Rain, a poetic coming-of-age story based on Amélie Nothomb’s novel. And that’s only part of the program.

In moments like this, a movie theater can be more than just a movie theater. Sometimes it can be a place to sit in the dark with strangers and remember that you’re not navigating the moment alone.
