Over two decades after her solo debut project, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, American singer and songwriter Lauryn Hill seems to be on the brink of releasing new music for the first time in about 25 years. In an exclusive interview with her son, Joshua Nesta “YG” Marley, for US-based celebrity news website TMZ, the grandson of reggae legend Bob Marley strongly hinted toward a sophomore album from Hill being in the pipeline, suggesting it could be available to stream sooner rather than later.
When asked about whether his mother would be dropping anything in the times to come, Marley revealed that “new music’s on the way” — a claim that was confirmed by Hill herself through a quick nod. Despite the absence of details regarding format, length, or exact release date, the mere confirmation of new music from her was enough to spark excitement amongst fans, many of whom had nearly abandoned hope of ever hearing something fresh from the former Fugees band member.
The last time she was questioned on the topic was with Rolling Stone back in 2021. Back then, Hill shared that many obstacles stood in the way of her releasing new music. These included industry pressures and personal challenges ranging from an alleged lack of support from her own label, experiencing several legal conundrums, and having to deal with the overarching stress of crafting something that would match the almost unparalleled success of her first project.
Though we trust fans to ease off now that she’s confirmed new material is in the works, let’s also hope they channel their excitement into positive support, allowing her the creative space she needs to deliver something truly worth the wait. And even if the music doesn’t hit the mark, we can always console ourselves with the classics she’s blessed us with in the past.
