There’s something oddly comforting about the scent of henna. The earthy, slightly sweet aroma smells like Eid mornings and staying up late the night before, huddled with cousins, all of you trying to keep your hands still while the paste dries. But if you’ve ever tried to actually do your own henna, you know how quickly that nostalgic cozy vibe turns into pure chaos. Crooked flowers, uneven vines, panic. Which is why, when Azra Khamissa—more commonly known as Dr. Azra to her 193,000 Instagram followers—shares a step-by-step tutorial for a DIY henna design, we listen.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, Dr. Azra is one of the most influential henna artists of our time. A chiropractor-turned-designer-turned-henna-artist, the Dubai-based creative has been singlehandedly reimagining what henna looks like and who it’s for. Her designs are minimal, clean, and quietly subversive: geometric shapes, half-moons, negative space. It’s certainly not the traditional floral designs or curlicues you see in wedding salons, but wearable, cool-girl henna.
And now, just in time for Eid Al Adha (June 6), Dr. Azra has shared an exclusive DIY henna design tutorial with MILLE that’s actually doable—no fine motor skills of a surgeon required. So if you’ve been meaning to get into henna but didn’t know where to start, we got you. Pick up a cone (Dr. Azra’s own natural and non-toxic henna cones are available online and ship regionally) and read on for a simple yet striking henna design you can do yourself at home.

Step 1.
Draw the straight lines up the fingers. The best way to draw lines is to practice! At least 20 times will help you to perfect your lines.
Step 2.
Outline your flowers, then do it again so that it’s thicker.
Step 3.
Fill the flowers with smeller lines in the direction of the petals.
Step 4.
Let your Azra Natural Henna dry for at least an hour and watch as the color changes and gets darker over the next 48 hours.
