Dubai Design Week (DDW), the region’s largest design festival, is set to return for its ninth edition in Dubai Design District (D3). Art, design, and culture enthusiasts will have a chance to experience an abundance of creativity from the UAE and the region from Nov. 7 to 12 by way of a variety of exhibitions, workshops, pop-ups, talks, and more.
The free-to-attend event will feature a range of design disciplines including, architecture, product design, interior design, and multimedia— expect more than 500 participants from over 40 countries. Since UAE President H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayhan announced that 2023 will be the “Year of Sustainability,” the event’s ninth edition will see a strong emphasis on the science, technology, and ideas behind utilizing previously used materials in ways that promote sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Here is what you can expect from this dynamic week of design:
Installations
This year’s programme includes plenty of large-scale outdoor installations, with a total of 20 to walk through and explore. The installations will adhere to sustainable practices— take for example the Altostrata installation, which is a 3D printed architectural pavilion made from sugar, loofahs, and paper pulp, showcasing sustainable practices. Or, the Eco Sand Wall, a eco-sustainable structure redefining sustainable architecture, blending nature-inspired aesthetics with eco-conscious materials such as PLA, 3D printing, and a distinctive Voronoi pattern.
Downtown Design
The anchor event of DDW, as the Middle East’s leading fair for contemporary and innovative design, Downtown Design’s tenth anniversary will be showcasing a range of the latest collections, innovative products, and design solutions.
Exhibitions and pop-ups
This series of curated experiences, featuring design disciplines and practitioners, will offer a space for education, critical discourse, and dialogue from established and emerging designers. One of the many exhibitions include a UAE designer exhibition featuring Egyptian architect Nuhayr Zein’s innovative jewelry box that seamlessly merges tradition and sustainability.
The Marketplace
Returning from Nov. 11 to 12 at D3, those looking to shop can head to the outdoor retail enterprise gathering the best of local artisanal products, including fashion, jewelry, homeware, beauty, and more.
Talks and workshops
For anyone interested in expanding their knowledge about different design disciplines, throughout the week numerous talks and workshops will take place bringing together a diverse line-up of regional and international designers, leaders, and creatives providing industry insights.
