Regardless of the country, the recipe for a mouth-watering shawarma is almost always the same. Start with some flat bread, add the meat of your choice — either beef or chicken — throw in some pickles, squeeze some garlic sauce, and you’re basically done. While many would want to argue about seasoning or the ideal marinade, we’d like to assume that no one here can explain how one Egyptian traveller ended up with money inside of his sandwich.
According to Cairo Airport officials, last week, a man was arrested after he was found trying to smuggle over $25,000 hidden inside the staple Middle Eastern wrap. Following a thorough inspection of his bag’s content, after security agents grew suspicious of the unnamed individual’s luggage, authorities found 1,253,000 Egyptian Pounds ($26,000) tucked in between pickles, peppers, and meat. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, showing officers retrieving the hidden stack of cash from stale-looking flatbreads.
About to board a plane headed to Kuwait, it remains unclear why exactly the traveler chose such an unconventional method to carry his money or what he intended to do with it once arrived.
Given Egypt’s allowance for travelers to enter or leave with up to $10,000 (or its equivalent in other currencies) without declaration, it is suspected that the person tried to circumvent the regulation but failed out of misfortune. Maybe he’ll have better luck by hiding it in vine leaves next time.
