Egyptian-British actor Amir El-Masry has been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) in recognition of his performance in the British film, In Camera.
The actor took to Instagram to share the exciting announcement, writing: “Nominated for the Best Supporting Performance award for my role in In Camera film at BIFA. I am so honored. Good news and yet it’s hard to celebrate given what is happening in the world right now. Heart is full and heavy. “
Directed by Naqqash Khalid in his directorial debut, the film had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and tells the tale of Aden, portrayed by Nabhaan Rizwan, a young actor entangled in a nightmarish cycle of auditions. Following numerous rejections, Aden embarks on a quest to discover a new role for himself.
The actor, who we know as the arrogant highschooler in Egyptian movie Ramadan Mabrouk, Abul-Alamein Hamouda, first gained international acclaim for his role in Limbo (2020), which earned him a Scotland BAFTA in 2021 for his portrayal of a Syrian asylum seeker who finds himself living on a small Scottish island.
El-Masry was also awarded with a BAFTA Breakthrough Brits award by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 2020.
More recently, he notably starred in Netflix’s hit series The Crown, portraying the young version of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, the father of the late Princess Diana’s partner, Dodi.
Additionally, he made an appearance in Netflix’s sci-fi drama The One, a TV series released in March 2021, adapted from British author John Marrs’ bestselling novel.
