6 Facts About Luca Zidane, Algeria’s New Goalkeeper

it’s giving deja vu ngl

If you’re in your twenties today, chances are, you came to know the name Zidane not by seeing him play live but by watching countless Youtube video edits of the former French captain’s skills throughout the years. An uncontested legend of the game in the early naughts, the 1998 Ballon D’Or recipient — who hung his boots up after a polarizing FIFA World Cup final in 2006 — is mostly remembered through the tales older generations have to recount about the one who made football look so simple. And though many might regret not having been old enough to witness, firsthand at least, the full extent of his prime, there should be some consolation in seeing his son, Luca, take to the pitch and see the same surname that once made so many dream reappear across the back of a jersey.

Keep scrolling for six facts you must know about the footballer carrying the Zidane legacy forward.

Luca Zidane was born on May 13, 1998, in Aix-en-Provence, France. A Taurus, the 27-year-old came into the world just weeks before his father, Zinedine Zidane, led France to its first-ever FIFA World Cup win; an achievement sealed on home soil, and marked by two decisive headers he scored in a 3–0 final against Brazil.

He has four brothers

Luca is the second of four brothers. The eldest, Enzo Zidane, now 30, stepped away from professional football at the age of 29 in 2024.

Luca is followed by Theo Zidane, 23, who currently plays in Spain’s second division with Córdoba CF. The youngest of the four, Elyaz Zidane, 20, is currently signed with Real Betis in Spain’s first division.

He’s a goalkeeper

Unlike his father or siblings, Luca is the only Zidane to have chosen to play as goalkeeper. His father, Zinedine, made his name as a midfielder, as did Enzo and Theo, while Elyaz took the defensive route, playing as a centre-back.

He went through Real Madrid’s academy

Luca joined Real Madrid’s academy at the age of six at a time when his father was still part of the senior squad. He stayed at the club until 2020, working his way through the ranks and eventually breaking into the first team, where he made only two appearances. After leaving Madrid, he spent two seasons with Rayo Vallecano, followed by a year at SD Eibar. He is currently signed with Granada CF, competing in Spain’s second division.

He represents Algeria at International level

Unlike his father — who’s widely considered a French footballing icon — Luca chose to represent Algeria, a national side his father himself was eligible to play for too. As Algeria’s first-choice goalkeeper since September 2025, he’s currently featured with Algeria’s national football team at the ongoing edition of AFCON, which is being held in Morocco. He made his first appearance on Oct. 14, 2025 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Uganda, which his side won 2-1.

He’s a devout Muslim

Luca is a practicing Muslim and has never shied away from expressing his faith publicly. Clips of his pre-match prayers have circulated widely in the past, as have images from his recent trip to Mecca, where he performed Umrah.
