21,39 Confirms Saudi Arabia’s Thriving Art Scene

A look at the gallery at the heart of the city’s creative boom

With Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 plan well underway, Jeddah has quickly emerged as the nation’s cultural capital. And there’s one gallery stood at the forefront of the city’s artistic revolution: Hafez Gallery.

Founded in 2014, the gallery has built a reputation for itself over the years for its striking focus on Saudi talent. With an ultra-successful edition of Saudi Art Council’s 21, 39 art fair underway, last week proved to be an exciting time for the gallery as it expanded its reach across the region, putting a spotlight on emerging and established talent.

Entitled Al Obour, the gallery’s own exhibition featured the work of Lebanese-born, Kuwait-based artist Ali Chaaban who unveiled life-size “carpet” paper planes at the exhibition. The series, entitled 12 PM Class Series, looks to nostalgic elements of classroom entertainment as a means of challenging current educational systems.

Also on display was Saeed Gamhawi’s equally gigantic artwork as well as Saudi Artist Khalid Zahid’s arabesque neon rollercoaster.
