5 of the Best Horror Movies to Watch on Netflix

Get into the Halloween spirit

October is the month where we get to indulge in everything spooky. So as the weather gets colder, there’s nothing like getting cosy in bed, and binging on Netflix. So if dressing up isn’t your thing, don’t worry, we’ve got your Halloween covered.

Leave the kid’s stuff aside this year and prepare to watch some of the creepiest horror movies out right now.

The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense – which got an Oscar nomination for Best Picture – might not really be considered a horror movie, but it still is arguably one of the scariest movies of all time. This iconic psychological thriller was released in 1999, and follows a boy who talks to the dead. The story is unravelled by his troubled relationship with his psychologist. A heart-pounding movie not to be missed.

The Witch

The Witch caused a sensation at Sundance and earned Robert Eggers the Best Director prize. It follows a 17th century puritan family leaving a Christian colony to rebuild their own perfect life in the wilderness, before their new-born disappears. Things get extremely creepy.

A Dark Song

If horror movies aren’t really your thing, then this one’s for you. The first atmospheric and relentless supernatural feature from Irish director Liam Gavin follows a grieving mother who tries to get in touch with her son with the help of an occultist in a mystical house. A brilliant ghoulish movie.

The Invitation

Karyn Kusama’s suspenseful film follows a group of wealthy friends reuniting for a dinner party in a modernist home in Hollywood Hills. The Invitation perfectly manages to subtly build tension while keeping us tuned in right up until the credits roll.

Under the Shadow

The directorial debut of Iran-born, London-based Babak Anvari is both incredibly terrifying and realistic, and that’s what’s so powerful about it. Following a mother and her daughter in Tehran, during the final days of the Iran-Iraq war, while they are both besieged and left alone in an apartment block, Under The Shadow is an intelligent horror movie about evil jinn and feminism. A must-see.
