Two years after taking on his role as Saint Laurent’s creative director, Anthony Vaccarello showcased his first men’s collection last night, with none other than the New York City skyline serving as backdrop.
The Belgian-Italian designer took to the open-air of Liberty State Park to showcase his “urban macadam cowboy” Spring-Summer 2019 collection—a bold move that’s nonetheless become common amongst some of the biggest fashion houses despite the risks, with Louis Vuitton going as far as hiring a shaman to keep bad weather away at last week’s runway show, held outdoors at Fondation Maeght in France.
While grey clouds floated over the Louis Vuitton catwalks, Vaccarello’s show went off without a hitch. With crystal-clear night skies, models walked on marble floors sporting their seventies- inspired looks, with the iconic skyline standing in plain sight.
The collection was polished and streamlined, with skinny silhouettes reminiscent of those made a Saint Laurent signature by his predecessor, Hedi Slimane. The pieces featured intricate embroideries and textured patterns that made his seventies-cowboy vision all the more clear.
