Chanel’s Mademoiselle Privé exhibition is heading to Tokyo, and the fashion house just dropped a film by legendary director Sofia Coppola to celebrate.
Entitled ‘In homage to Mademoiselle’ the American director created a video collage ahead of the exhibition. Digging deep into the French house’s archive, Coppola brings rarely-seen images, videos, advertisements and film extracts to light, set to the tune of Grimes’s electro-pop hit ‘Oblivion’, bringing a contemporary touch and an ode to Tokyo’s eclectic energy.
“I did a collage from the Chanel archives, trying to capture the essence of Chanel, what Coco started and Karl and Virginie have continued” Coppola said in a statement.
The pairing makes perfect sense; Coppola is a long-time friend of the fashion house, with a relationship that dates back long before she had even touched a camera. Cappola was an intern at Chanel when she was a teenager, working under Chanel’s former creative director Karl Lagerfeld.

“Chanel embodies chic Parisian style and I tried to incorporate the playfulness Karl always brought to his approach. I loved looking through the footage of so many beautiful collections and the iconic women throughout its history,” the director added.

The film dives into every corner of the iconic luxury brand, from its Haute Couture collections and the N5 perfume, to the creation of the ‘Bijoux de Diamant’ jewellery collection.
