Remember the early 00’s when we were wearing diamantés, flashy logos, fishnet tops, low-rise jeans, trucker hats and velour tracksuits? Well it’s 2019 and the Y2K aesthetic has come back with a vengeance.

The easiest way to wear the trend? A French manicure. Think ‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘The Simple Life’. The so-bad-it’s-so-good trend has already fired up the runways for a few seasons already, with the return of 2000s favourites like UGG and Juicy Couture collaborating with contemporary designers like Y/Project and Vetements). Honourable mention goes to the return of Dior’s iconic Saddle Bag and Prada’s nylon baguette bag. Both are a testament to the fact that the trend is going through a second coming of age – and we’re here for it.

Once considered cheap and “chavvy”, the French manicure is having a major moment. Recently spotted on everyone from Beyoncé and Bella Hadid to Kylie Jenner and Ariana Grande (to name but a few), it’s safe to say the nostalgic design, which was once sported by ailing pop stars, glamour models and exotic dancers, is still defiantly relevant today.

But in 2019, the options are plentiful. Ignore anyone who says that Fall is the season for gloomy colours. This season, forget deep reds, dark blues and even blacks, and experiment with the French manicure. Think geometric shapes, bold colours and neon hues. Whether you choose to go for an on-trend coffin nail or a short, sharp and chic square, the French mani works on pretty much any nail shape, but we love a classic square acrylic nail with a nude nail.

Ready to step out of your comfort zone? Look no further. These are some of the best French mani designs to try.
