Hard-hitting drill, murky grime, and punchy electronic sounds are all elements that can define Palestinian-Jordanian rapper SHBASH’s second EP, Top. Almost two years after the release of his last sonic statement, titled Wlad al Massa, the Amman-based MC is finally making his much-anticipated comeback– this time with a whole new creative team.
Reflecting the daily experiences of the people of the Hashemite Kingdom, the artist’s latest project serves as a mirror that allows listeners to gain a deeper understanding of life in Jordan. By providing a platform for many like him to relate to and find solace in, the rising wordsmith vividly captures the essence of everyday existence in the streets of his country without succumbing, nor sinking, into defeatist melancholy. Boasting a signature sound of his own, which has been his trademark for many years since his debut in 2019, the young MC continues to carve out his space in the region’s soundscape, with his last EP expected to become “a standout addition to any club playlist with (his) catchy flows, syncopated rhythms, and self-reflective songwriting,” as per a statement.
From delving into the intricacies and impacts of regional politics and exploring the depths of heartbreaks to expressing his fervent admiration for sports cars, the 24-year-old artist covers a wide range of themes under the guiding light of his Jordanian counterpart behind the microphone, The Synaptik. An acclaimed figure in the region’s rap scene, the doctor-turned-rapper has chosen his protégé’s release to announce the pre-launch of his own record label, MilQ, under which Shbash’s latest project falls.
“As we prepare to launch our label, we’d like to showcase the artists that we’ve been working with to give people a hint of what to expect,” The Synaptik told MILLE. “We have a pedigree roster of real artists with original sounds and high artistic value to put forward before we introduce their new home,” he continued.
Co-founded with Nasr Sharbagy, Milq aims to empower artists by providing them with greater control and ownership over their music and revenue streams. Its official debut to audiences is slated to coincide with the release of The Synaptik’s third studio album, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of both the artist and the Levantine music arena. While suspense builds for his next move, and the unveiling of his latest artistic endeavor, fans are left on the edge of their seats having to content themselves with the offerings of his henchman— which is equally as exciting.
