After years of marginalization, the Palestinian cause is finally afforded a rare moment of institutional acknowledgment as Kaouther Ben Hania’s The Voice of Hind Rajab officially enters the Golden Globe race. This week, it was announced that the Tunisian director’s latest feature was chosen to compete in the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language category.
First premiered at the 82nd edition of the Venice International Film Festival in August—where it won the second highest honor, the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize— the docudrama recounts the murder of five-year-old Hind Rajab at the hands of Israeli occupation forces. Her death, which took place amidst the genocide in Gaza, became one of the conflict’s most searing symbols, crystallizing in a single loss the vast violence endured by thousands across years of dispossession, bombardment, and exile.
At the time of the event, Rajab was inside a car with her relatives attempting to flee a war-torn Gaza before the vehicle was targeted by Israeli forces. Killing all her relatives except her and her cousin, the two contacted the Palestine Red Crescent Society for help, in vain, as both would later be found dead alongside the two paramedics who were dispatched in a final, fatal attempt to reach them. The recording of their voices would later go on to be published, haunting public consciousness while lending the film its chilling emotional core.
