Jane Birkin’s Most Personal Birkin Heads to Auction in Abu Dhabi

A piece of fashion history is making its way to Abu Dhabi this December, and it carries the unmistakable mark of Jane Birkin herself. Sotheby’s has announced the auction of Le Birkin Voyageur, one of only four Hermès Birkin bags ever owned by the late singer and style icon. The sale will take place during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week (December 2–5) at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, marking a major cultural moment for the region’s growing luxury market.

Gifted to Birkin by Hermès in 2003, the black Box leather bag—measuring 40 cm and showing the scuffs of real life—was her daily companion for years. Inside, her handwriting still glimmers in silver ink: notes, drawings, and the tender inscription that inspired its name, “Mon Birkin bag qui m’a accompagné dans le monde entier” (“My Birkin bag, my globetrotting companion”). It’s these personal details that turn the piece from a fashion collectible into a cultural artifact.

The sale follows July’s record-breaking auction of Birkin’s original prototype in Paris, which fetched more than $10 million after a ten-minute bidding battle between nine collectors. The winning bid came from a Japanese buyer, catapulting the piece to the status of most valuable handbag ever sold. That historic sale reignited global fascination with both Hermès and Birkin herself—a woman whose name became synonymous with luxury, yet who famously auctioned off her own bags to raise money for AIDS and human-rights charities.

Presented in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), Abu Dhabi Collectors’ Week marks Sotheby’s first major auction series in the region, spanning high jewelry, rare timepieces, collector cars, and even museum-quality fine art. The headline pieces include The Desert Rose, a Fancy Vivid Orangy Pink Diamond valued at up to $7 million, and a complete four-piece Patek Philippe Star Caliber 2000 set estimated to exceed $10 million, alongside three McLaren racing cars sold during the Formula One finale.

Estimated between $240,000 and $440,000, Le Birkin Voyageur blurs the line between art, fashion, and history. For Abu Dhabi, hosting such a storied piece is a sign of the emirate’s growing footprint in the global cultural and luxury conversation. For collectors, it’s a once-in-a-generation chance to own the most personal Birkin of them all.
