Lights, Camera, Expansion! Cinema Akil Opens a Second Location

Did we mention it's free?

Cinema Akil hardly needs an introduction. As Dubai’s first and only independent cinema, the homegrown theater is practically synonymous with inciting cultural experiences through its meticulously-curated film selection. Founded by Butheina Kazim in 2014 as a “nomadic theater” before establishing a permanent venue in Alserkal Avenue, the cinematic platform doesn’t fall short when it comes to crafting thematic events for cinephiles all over Dubai to immerse themselves in. A visit promises not just exposure to new information but also an emotional journey that addresses unexplored sentiments, prompts intriguing questions, and perhaps, offers answers.

Embraced by movie lovers, artists, and creatives, Cinema Akil has evolved into a cherished haven. Now, the independent cinema extends its presence to a new seasonal outpost within Dubai’s vibrant 25hours Hotel Dubai One Central. Upon entering, guests are immediately captivated by meticulously placed memorabilia courtesy of Mumbai-based Jetsons Designs, while vintage movie posters, ancient televisions, and aged vinyl players contribute to the immersive ambiance.

Architect Joud Malhas, the creative mind behind the striking red scaffolding in the open atrium, artfully recreates the atmosphere of a bustling back alley— a nod to the UAE metropolis’s  perpetual state of construction and a homage to Cinema Akil’s signature color. The outpost at 25hours, with adaptability and collaboration at its core, offers versatile seating options, which includes seats crafted by Bethlehem-based Local Industries, founded by designers Elias and Yousef Anastas, and one-of-a-kind conversation benches in an electrifying red by Beirut-based Post Industrial Crafts.

Additionally, it boasts cutting-edge technology, featuring state-of-the-art laser projection and Dolby 7.1 cinema sound, ensuring compatibility with industry-standard video and audio formats. Positioned within the cavernous space of the atrium, the new outpost prioritizes acoustic design and engineering. Executed by Acoustics Studio 21dB, this design maintains the integrity of the cinematic experience while ensuring accessibility, with a nod to the public and outdoor setting.

Commenting on the new venue , Kazim says, “Cinema Akil in 25hours is more than just a cinema; it’s a vibrant hub where film and culture converge, reflecting the dynamic spirit of Dubai. Bringing a bespoke version of the Cinema Akil experience to 25hours Hotel is a significant milestone in our mission to champion the culture of film and the cinematic arts, while exposing international cinema to regional audiences.”

She added: “Our partnership with Ennismore is a collaboration built on a special blend of shared values combining innovation, community-centricity and trust. Located at the main artery of Dubai, sandwiched between the past and the future in Dubai’s story the space pays tribute to Dubai’s constant evolution, aligning with Cinema Akil’s iterative nature. Brought together by the call to ‘Come as You Are,’ it is designed for versatility, fostering collaboration and reinvention with a cohesive identity. Their roots from Berlin, a city centered on celebrating cinema, align perfectly with our mission. Through this partnership, we look forward to enhancing the cinematic experience in this dynamic city we call home.”

In its December lineup, Cinema Akil’s latest outpost unveils a compelling collaboration with Sole DXB, paying homage to the global phenomenon that transcended boundaries and became a resonant voice for the voiceless— hip-hop. This thematic exploration traverses geographical distances, connecting Palestine to the heartbeat of New York City. From Palestine to New York City, the public screening program for the month is a thoughtfully-curated selection of four feature documentaries that delve into the profound impact of rap and its roots in history. The film lineup is a testament to the far-reaching influence of this cultural movement, capturing its essence and significance on a global scale with featured documentaries The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, You’re Watching Video Music Box, Slingshot Hip Hop, and Rolling Like Thunder
