This is Where You Can Buy Mahershala Ali’s Oscars Hat

We found the designer behind the Muslim-inspired look

Plenty of stunning looks made their way on to the red carpet at this year’s Oscars, but few made as big of an impact as Mahershala Ali. And whilst his textured Ermenegildo Zegna suit was nothing short of extraordinary, it was his Gigi Burris Millinery headwear that stole the show.

The standout black hat, called the Sharina, featured a pinched crown and cuff detailing with distinct influence from Jinnah caps popularized by the founder of Pakistan Muhammad Ali Jinnah, or the Iraqi Sidara associated with King Faisal I.

The cap falls somewhere between casual and formal, but the curious design didn’t stop the proud Muslim actor from donning the cap to accept the Academy Award—making him the first African American, and Muslim to win two Best Supporting Actor awards (and wear a hat while doing so).

The designer behind the piece, Gigi Burris, who has been in the headwear game for quite some time, launched her namesake label in 2010. Since then, the CFDA award-nominated American designer’s pieces have been worn by the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Bella Hadid, and now Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali.

The Gigi Burris Sharina hat is now on sale at gigiburris.com.
