MILLE Reviews: The Mandarin Oriental in Muscat, Oman

everything you need to know ahead of your stay

If you’re seeking a slice of heaven on earth, the Mandarin Oriental in Muscat is your perfect sanctuary. Nestled within the Omani capital’s rugged, rustic cliffs and overlooking the serene turquoise waters of the Gulf of Arabia, the newly-opened beachfront hotel is a must-stay for those looking to indulge in unrivaled luxury and serenity. Despite opening less than one-year-ago last June, the hotel has already established itself as a premiere destination for discerning travelers who wish to explore all of the beauty Muscat has to offer.

Boasting 150 rooms and suites— designed by French interior designer Xavier Cartron— looking out onto the glistening beach strip at Shatti A- Qurum or the Hajjar mountains—providing a backdrop that is as tranquil as it is breathtaking—guests will be transported into a world of utmost comfort and luxury. There are seven suite categories—with the 312 square meter Royal Suite being the largest and most lavish. Each suite, including my Junior Sea View Suite, features a seating area, floor-to-ceiling windows, a spacious private balcony, a walk-in wardrobe, a soak-in tub, and a walk-in shower with dual basins. There are thoughtful touches of Omani culture peppered throughout by way of subtle details like geometric print wallpaper, locally-inspired artworks, plush rugs, colorful mosaics, and ornamental decor like rustic frankincense burners. The headboards in the suites feature a handcrafted sadu pattern in subtle shades of brown and cream and each piece takes months to create before being readied for production

In the lobby, you’ll find a hand-painted fan by pioneering Omani artist Alia Al Farsi. This fan, a signature symbol of the luxury hotel brand, has been creatively reinterpreted to showcase Oman’s rich heritage. It features a colorful portrayal of 11 Omani women, each representing one of Oman’s governorates, adorned in the distinct local attire of their regions. In addition to the fan, guests can also expect to see other captivating art inspired by Omani culture and heritage, including Dina Hammadi’s “Gilded Harmony,” a sculpture of woven brass and bronze strips, while they check in or enjoy the sweet and savory afternoon tea presented on handcrafted copper cake stands topped with intricate palm motifs in the lobby lounge.

Speaking of the afternoon tea, the food is also excellent: Guests can enjoy locally-caught grilled jumbo prawns and sheri fish at the all-day dining Euro-Asian fusion restaurant Rawya for lunch; and for dinner, Italian classics like ricotta and spinach ravioli with lamb ragù, margherita pizza, and classic lasagne made with fresh pasta sheets, Wagyu beef ragù, and bechamel sauce at Essenza with views of the sea. For breakfast, may we suggest TwoThree58 Club? The executive lounge, accessible to suite guests, occupies its own dedicated floor and boasts an outdoor terrace with lounge seating where you can enjoy a selection of tantalizing breakfast options, including Omani lobster benedict served with an English muffin and mixed salad, a Wagyu avocado toast topped with Omani spices, and our personal favorite, the King Crab Omelet with locally-sourced crab and caviar. Whether you’re in the mood for a casual beachfront meal or a sophisticated gourmet dinner, the culinary experiences are designed to delight.

Beyond the exceptional dining options, the hotel offers a variety of on-site activities and facilities designed to pamper and please. From the sprawling outdoor pool and the fully equipped fitness center to the serene spa and luxurious hammam, there is no shortage of ways to unwind. Meanwhile, for those eager to explore beyond the hotel’s confines, the Mandarin Oriental Muscat boasts a prime location, ideally situated within 30 minutes of key attractions. Guests can easily visit the majestic Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, wander through bustling local souks, or discover serene hidden lagoons—all just a short drive away.

The Mandarin Oriental Muscat also offers curated excursions such as coral reef diving, sunset boat cruises, fishing trips, snorkelling, sailing, and whale-watching amidst the pristine waters of the Daymaniyat Islands.

Our only complaint? Time flies too quickly here. The Mandarin Oriental in Muscat wraps you in such comfort and luxury that leaving feels impossible. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself planning your next stay before you’ve even checked out.
