The Met Gala 2023 Dress Code? Karl Lagerfeld

The late designer is getting a major retrospective at the New York Met

Karl Lagerfeld is to be the subject of the Met Museum’s Spring 2023 Costume Institute Exhibition, announced Anna Wintour and The Met’s Andrew Bolton at a press conference in Paris this morning.

The exhibition will celebrate the prolific late designer’s work with Chanel, Fendi, Chloe, and more. Titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, the upcoming exhibition will open following the Met Gala, and will be on view from May 5 to July 16, 2023. It will be the third ever solo designer show curated by Bolton for the Met, following exhibitions paying homage to Alexander McQueen in 2011 and Comme des Garcon’s Rei Kawakubo in 2017.

Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most captivating, prolific, and recognizable forces in fashion and culture, known as much for his extraordinary designs and tireless creative output as for his legendary persona,” Max Hollein, Marina Kellen French Director of The Met, said in a released statement.

This immersive exhibition will unpack his singular artistic practice, inviting the public to experience an essential part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation.”

The show will be presented at The Met Fifth Avenue in the Tisch Gallery and is set to feature approximately 150 original looks from the five houses Lagerfeld helped shape — Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel — in addition to pieces from his eponymous brand. Each piece will be paired with corresponding sketches by the designer, who passed away in 2019.

It will follow the Met Gala, which will fall on May 1. I think it’s safe to say we all know what designer every celebrity will be wearing.
