The Metaverse is Hosting its First Digital Fashion Week

A new era is upon us

Fashion Week Metaverse

Since the term was first coined in 1992 by American novelist Neal Stephenson in his dystopian Snow Crash fiction, the Metaverse has transitioned from metaphorically representing an unknown place to becoming the almost-tangible platform it is today.

The virtual universe has been on everyone’s lips in the past few months as its novelty and potential usage have lured everyone in on its journey to rise. Now more and less established in everyone’s subconsciousness, the digital world will soon play host to its first fashion week.

The inaugural iteration of Metaverse Fashion Week is actually happening and will kick off on March 24 and will run for three days.

Avatars will be strutting down the runway for a slew of worldwide brands and luxury labels. It has been rumored that over 50 designers will be marking their presence on the platform and showcasing their latest works. The designers set to make their metaverse debut include Elie Saab, Etro, Tommy Hilfiger, Dundas, Garrett Leight, Roberto Cavalli, Paco Rabanne, Hugo, Faith Connexion and Dolce & Gabbana. London retailing boutique Selfridges will also take this unprecedented opportunity to launch its first e-store on the metaverse while digital fashion house Auroboros is scheduled to host an immersive experience with a unique performance spearheaded by Canadian singer and songwriter Grimes.

“When I founded my namesake brand in 1985, I never imagined I’d see a time when fashion weeks would be held in a 3D, fully virtual world,” Hilfiger said. “As we further explore the metaverse and all it has to offer, I’m inspired by the power of digital technology and the opportunities it presents to engage with communities in fascinating, relevant ways.” he continued on his participation in the online event.

Built after the city of lights’ much-famed Avenue Montaigne, a luxury marketplace, called the ‘Boson Portal – Fashion District’, will be open to purchase digital and physical items through NFTs. Hosted on Decentraland, a 3D virtual world and browser-based platform with software running on the Ethereum blockchain, the event will not require any tickets and will therefore be free to attend.
