Misaj Is Where Ancestral North African Remedies Meet Modern Skincare

Remember when your grandparents could seemingly heal every other condition using just herbs and an assortment of oils? Emerging cosmetic label Misaj is tapping into that ancestral knowledge, reviving traditional practices with the rigor, safety, and precision of today’s beauty industry.

Founded by Moroccan-Algerian pharmacist and strategist Amèle Moussaoui, Misaj–meaning “mix” or “balance” in English– was built on the premise that protection doesn’t have to come at the cost of harsh chemicals and harmful formulas. With solutions inspired by North African remedies, French pharmacology, and traditional Chinese healing methods, the budding brand carved out a thoughtful niche in a market long shaped for cost efficiency rather than true well being.

“Misaj was born from my own story, my own contradictions. I never felt like I fully belonged anywhere, but it became a strength. I realized that immigrants, whatever their origins, form the biggest community of all. I want misaj to celebrate that sense of shared identity,” Messaoui told digital platform Future of Skincare (FoS). “Many of the people I collaborate with come from different places too. The creative process is collective and fluid, built on dialogue, and I think it is why it resonates so well with the community we are building. We all have traditional healing secrets that deserve to be shared and used in our modern life, and while the ingredients and rituals may differ, the intention remains the same,” she added.

The label’s pared-back catalogue serves as first-hand proof of its ethos, distilling the idea of medicinal balance into a product for everyday use. For now, Misaj’s e-shop carries a single offering: a vegan and cruelty-free skin cream and mosquito repellent. Hydrating up to three hours after application, the multi-functional moisturizer is formulated with Moroccan essential oils and andiroba; an element rich in vitamin E. Undeniably healthy by default and nature, the product reflects the Paris-based founder’s own upbringing.

“(…) I was constantly navigating between worlds. My father was all about conventional medicine; if we were sick, he’d say ‘take this drug.’ My mother, on the other hand, would use essential oils, herbs, or old remedies passed down from my great-grandmother,” she shared with FoS. “The convergence of those two approaches made me see health as something deeply interconnected. I learned early on that healing wasn’t only about treating symptoms; it was about finding balance and preventing illness before it appears. In China, my mom always said, people go to the doctor to prevent getting sick, not after. That mindset stayed with me during my pharmaceutical studies and became the premise of Misaj,”  she added.

She traces the idea back to a lifelong battle with mosquitoes, caught between either using “harsh repellents that felt aggressive and sticky” or staying at home where they would still find her. Going further, the Paris-based CEO revealed that in the market then, no product could hydrate, protect, and smell good at the same time. It is from these simple, yet unmet, realizations that Misaj took form.
