Morocco Makes History (Again) as FIFA U-20 World Cup Champions

history makers (encore)

Morocco’s U-20 team managed to do what their senior counterparts couldn’t back in 2022, which is bring the World Cup trophy back home. In a historic first for the North African Kingdom, the Atlas Cubs claimed the title of best football team under the age of 20, defeating Argentina in a 2-0 victory in Chile, where the competition was held.

With that win, Morocco not only became the first Arab nation to ever lift the trophy, but also joined Ghana as one of only two African countries to ever be crowned FIFA U-20 World Cup champions.

With both goals scored in the final’s first half— both put past Argentina’s goalkeeper by Yassir Zabiri— the young forward etched his name into Moroccan football history, sealing the win before halftime and sending an entire nation into celebration as soon as the final whistle blew.

“I said it from the start: we are not scared of any team,” the 20-year-old athlete said in a post-match interview. “They talked too much, we came to the game, and we ate them up,” he confidently concluded.

Adding yet another golden chapter in the country’s football history, Morocco now stands as U-20 World Champions (2025), U-17 African Champions (2025), U-23 African Champions (2023), Olympic bronze medalists (2024), and 2022 World Cup semi-finalists.

With their trophy haul growing across every division, Morocco’s momentum doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. After recently securing their place in the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time, attention is turning back to the senior squad, who famously made history in Qatar by becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach the semi-finals. As preparations begin for football’s biggest stage, the world will be watching to see whether Morocco can carry this winning streak all the way to AFCON in December or to the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
