Excitement has been growing since Netflix announced the release of Nadine Labaki’s new thriller, The Sand Castle. The award-winning Lebanese director and actress, known for her emotionally resonant and thought-provoking films like Capernaum and Caramel, is expected to deliver another powerful cinematic experience. With the forthcoming film’s global Netflix premiere set for Jan. 24, 2025, anticipation is only growing for what is slated to be another cinematic masterpiece from Labaki.
The Story of The Sand Castle
The story centers around a family of four—Yasmine, Nabil, and their children Jana and Adam—who find themselves marooned on an idyllic island. As their isolation deepens, and with no contact to the outside world, simmering tensions and long-held secrets begin to surface, jeopardizing the core of their family unit.
As they struggle to survive, Yasmine and Nabil desperately try to shield their youngest, Jana, from the truth they’ve been hiding. But as events spiral out of control and the line between reality and illusion blurs, the family is forced to confront painful choices and the deepest cracks in their relationships—all while clinging to the hope of making it back home.
Cast and Creative Team
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Labaki herself in another powerful performance alongside Palestinian actor Ziad Bakri (Meet the Barbarians) and Capernaum stars Zain and Reman Al Rafeea.
The film’s screenplay, a collaboration between American director Matty Brown, Jordanian writer Yassmina Karajah, and Egyptian-Qatari director Hend Fakhroo, blends diverse storytelling influences and marks Brown’s feature film debut.
Behind the scenes, the film features an equally impressive creative team, including cinematographer Jeremy Snell (Dirty Money), Oscar-winning sound designer Martin Hernandez (The Revenant), editor Nacho Ruiz Capillas (The Others), and composers West Dylan Thordson and Kat Vokes (Split).
