You might have worked out and ate nutritious food throughout the summer for the sake of your health, but isn’t that all pretty paradoxical if you’re still slathering your face and body with chemicals, parabens and silicones? So, if you’re picking up a new self-tanner, you might want to opt for a natural option.
The beauty industry comes with a history of oversight, with chemicals going unregulated for years on end (and women of colour being disproportionately exposed to such harmful chemicals, like the case with Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder for example).
But over the last few years there has been a radical shift which has given way for an entirely new sector of the beauty industry: natural and clean beauty.
And this new movement has given space for brands like Jessica Alba’s Honest Company, and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop, and of course, smaller but equally effective brands with ingredient lists you can actually pronounce.
Self-tanners have long-raised health concerns for medical experts. The main active ingredient in sunless tanning lotions, called dihydroxyacetone or DHA for short, has been proven to be largely safe, but other common ingredients like mineral oil, sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, amyl acetate, and octyl stearate can be pretty harmful.
In any case, sunless tanning is always a better option than sunbeds, or direct contact with the sun, but, of course, it’s always best to avoid these harmful ingredients. And to make things easier for you, we’ve rounded up our favourite natural products.
