There was a time when having a signature scent meant walking into a department store, picking something from a handful of familiar names, and wearing it until everyone in your life associated that smell with you. Now, fragrance people want something a little harder to clock. The niche perfume boom has turned smelling good into something closer to collecting, with bottles built around everything from caramel milkshakes and childhood memories to Turkish shadow theatre and Saudi roses.
And while “niche” has become one of beauty’s favorite buzzwords, the best fragrances in the category still earn the label through unexpected ingredients, unusual references, and perfumers willing to get a little weird. From cult names like Nishane and Maison Crivelli to newer houses you may not have encountered yet, these are the bottles worth making some room for on your shelf.
Kajal Äican
Created by perfumer Gökhan Şimşek for Parisian fragrance house Kajal, the 2024 scent opens with a full tropical fruit bowl of passionfruit, pineapple, and mandarin before ginger and black pepper cut through the sweetness. As it settles, vanilla, praline, musk, sandalwood, vetiver, and patchouli take over, giving all that juicy fruit a warmer, creamier finish. It is sweet, loud, and unapologetically extra. One for anyone who considers “you smell good” the bare minimum and would prefer “wait, what are you wearing?” Shop here
Roja London Elysium Absolue
Arriving in a flacon that fades from electric blue into vivid pink, finished with gold lettering and an oversized cap set with multicolored crystals, Roja Elysium Absolue is the kind of bottle that makes you want to keep it permanently on display. The fragrance follows suit. A generous burst of citrus and fruit opens into aromatic herbs and florals before settling into a warmer base of woods, musk, leather, vanilla, and ambergris. It is fresh and bright, but with enough depth and richness to keep it from disappearing into familiar citrus-fragrance territory. Shop here
Fugazzi Angel Dust
Angel Dust is Amsterdam fragrance house’s Fugazzi’s take on the skin scent, built around cashmere, white amber, and musk with a subtle kick of black pepper. It sits close to the body, warm and soft without becoming overly sweet, and has that slightly addictive quality that makes you keep smelling your own wrist throughout the day. For anyone who likes their fragrance to feel intimate and a little sensual, Angel Dust makes a convincing case for keeping things simple. Shop here
Idman Bermuda Waters
The extrait from UAE-based niche house Idman opens with gin, pear, saffron, and incense before tobacco, rum, cinnamon, and jasmine pull it into darker territory, eventually settling into sandalwood, vanilla, musk, and vetiver. Created by perfumer Shadi Samra, the fragrance was inspired by founder Joelle Sakkal’s memories of her father’s cigars and the lingering smokiness of a night out. The bottle deserves its own mention, too. Each one is topped with a hand-cut clear quartz cap, meaning no two are exactly alike. Shop here
Kheir 7 Minutes
Vanilla gourmands are everywhere right now, but 7 Minutes gives the category a little more to work with. The debut fragrance from Dubai-founded Kheir Fragrance House takes its cues from founder Siham Cyrine’s childhood love of caramel milkshakes, opening with caramel and a creamy milkshake accord before vanilla, marshmallow, rose, and violet begin to soften the sugar rush. Perfumer Shadi Samra grounds all that sweetness with woods, amber, musk, and ambergris, giving the dry-down a warmer, more grown-up character. At a 30% oil concentration, it is a proper extrait, too, so a little goes a long way. Shop here
NishaneHacivat
Hacivat has been around since 2017, but there is a reason it remains one of Nishane’s signatures. Created by perfumer Jorge Lee, the extrait opens with pineapple, grapefruit, and bergamot, giving it an immediate juicy freshness before cedarwood, patchouli, and jasmine push things in a greener, woodier direction. Oakmoss, Clearwood, and dry woods come through at the base, leaving behind something crisp, earthy, and surprisingly substantial for a fragrance that starts so bright. Even the name has a story. Hacivat takes its inspiration from the witty, cultured character of the same name from traditional Turkish shadow theatre, a fitting reference for an Istanbul house that frequently draws from its home city’s cultural history. Maison Crivelli Tobacco Carnaval
The 2026 extrait was created with perfumer Quentin Bisch and takes its inspiration from founder Thibaud Crivelli’s memory of a carnival, translating the experience through tobacco leaf, warm infused rum, smoke, spices, and fruity, liqueur-like facets. At a hefty 32% concentration, it is rich and enveloping, with the tobacco softened by boozy sweetness and a gourmand warmth that develops on the skin. The house deliberately keeps the complete list of notes under wraps, leaving some of the experience open to interpretation, which feels appropriate for a fragrance designed around the unpredictability of a night out. Bochan Aíma
A collaboration between German fragrance house Bochan and New York creative Bloody Dior, the extrait was developed with input from a circle that included Lil Yachty, A$AP Ferg, Steven Victor, Christian Combs, and Tommie Lee. The scent itself pairs woodland strawberry with aldehydes before sandalwood, cashmere, and ambroxan soften things up, eventually settling into musk, amber, and oud. The strawberry keeps it juicy without sending it straight into candy territory, while the oud gives the sweetness some weight. Inspired by the contrasts of New York, Aíma feels like an interesting meeting point between fragrance, streetwear, and music culture, which is probably why it feels considerably cooler than the usual celebrity-adjacent perfume collaboration. Ormonde JayneTa’if
If rose perfumes usually make you think of your grandmother’s dressing table, Ta’if might change your mind. Ormonde Jayne builds the fragrance around the famously fragrant roses grown in the Saudi city of Ta’if, pairing them with pink pepper, saffron, and dates before freesia, orange blossom, and jasmine enter the mix. Vanilla and amber give the florals a warm, slightly sweet finish without turning the whole thing into a dessert. The use of dates is especially clever, adding a distinctly regional touch to a rose that already has strong ties to the Arabian Peninsula. Shop here
MizensirPerfect Oud
Perfect Oud comes with a small plot twist: there is no natural oud essence in it. Master perfumer Alberto Morillas instead recreates the impression of burning oud through Alaskan cedar and smoky cade wood, brightened with bergamot and coriander and softened by Bulgarian rose and iris. The result is woody, smoky, and leathery, but much fresher than the dense, syrupy ouds that tend to dominate the category. It also makes Perfect Oud an interesting entry point for anyone who thinks they have already decided oud is not for them. The flacon follows Mizensir’s restrained Swiss aesthetic, with clear glass, a laser-engraved silver plate, and a weighty metallic cap, leaving all the drama to what is happening inside. Shop here
