Palestine will be put at the centre of the UAE’s attention next month as Cinema Akil will be playing host to an independent festival. Now in its eighth year, Reel Palestine will be returning to its homebase, Cinema Akil in Dubai and will spotlight, as per usual, stories from the embattled parcel of land.
Running from January 29 to February 6, the nine-day event will spotlight feature films and shorts from Palestinian directors and filmmakers.
Gathering thousands of attendees year in and out since its initial launch in 2015, the festival will also be the home to several local brands that will put traditional Palestinian items up for sale in an effort to support homegrown businesses.
The festival has also partnered up with other external organisations to help cast a brighter light on the event. Visual Palestine, Alserkal’s Kave, Gulf Photo Plus and The Flip Side are amongst the other main names taking part in the ceremony.
2021 definitely has been a troublesome year for Palestinians. The outburst of violence in the past six months was of extreme intensity, garnering international attention like never before. And as it always does, Reel Palestine is amplifying a voice in the region that has been consistently muted.
