Saudi’s Film Critique Forum Unveils Theme and Program Ahead of Third Edition

catch you there, maybe?

Gearing up for the launch of its much-anticipated third edition, Saudi Arabia’s Film Critique Forum (FCF) has revealed this week the official theme that will shape this year’s conversations, screenings, and cultural programming: Cinema: The Art of Place.

Set to unfold across three different cities— Asir in August, Qatif in October, and Riyadh in November— the forum will serve as a roving platform for film critics, directors, researchers, and audiences to engage with the ways in which cinema frames, reflects, and interprets the idea of “place.” From what we know, a number of events will be tailored to each host-city’s own cultural identity, offering a localized experience that echoes the forum’s central theme. Attendees can expect curated film screenings, critique sessions, and site-specific activations designed to fully immerse participants and passersby.

With a growing reputation as a space for cinematic dialogue, critical exploration, and creative engagement, the forum continues to solidify its role as a key player in the region’s expanding film ecosystem. The initiative, spearheaded by Saudi Arabia’s Film Commission, aims to build on the success of last year’s edition which welcomed over 10,000 visitors from more than 30 countries, and featured over 35 participating organizations, including prominent critics, filmmakers, and academics. Doubling down on their efforts to nurture and support a critically rich cinema culture from within, FCF represents just one, out of many other programs and events that highlight Saudi Arabia’s broader commitment to building a healthy homegrown film industry.

The exact opening and closing dates of the Film Critique Forum remain under wraps, though it’s expected to wrap up in November. But cinephiles won’t have to wait long for their next fix. December marks the return of the Red Sea International Film Festival (RSFF). Now in its fifth edition, RSFF will be Saudi Arabia’s next major cinematic gathering, drawing filmmakers, critics, and fans from around the world for two packed weeks of premieres, panels, and red carpets. Stay tuned for more details on what this year’s edition has in store.
