In a move that signals the accelerating rise of Arab cinema on the global stage, Sony Pictures International Productions has entered a multi-year partnership with The Film Committee at Media City Qatar to co-finance and co-produce a slate of Arabic-language films from across the Middle East and North Africa.
Announced on Nov. 22 during the Industry Days of the 2025 Doha Film Festival, the agreement marks one of the most significant studio-backed investments in Arab storytelling to date. It establishes Sony’s long-term presence in Qatar while deepening the studio’s commitment to distributing, developing, and producing feature films anchored in regional talent.
H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Chairman of the Film Committee, said the partnership reflects a broader shift in how the region engages with global filmmaking. He noted that Sony’s entry into the Arab market “demonstrates the region’s growing prominence in the global film industry and the Global South’s emergence as a true creative force.”
Al Thawadi added that the collaboration is designed to elevate the next generation of Arab filmmakers by giving them “the platform, resources, and global exposure” needed to bring their stories to audiences worldwide, ultimately “building bridges between cultures through cinema” and positioning Qatar as an integral part of the world’s storytelling future.
Steven O’Dell, representing International Marketing & Distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, echoed this long-term vision, describing the Middle East as “one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing regions in entertainment.” He said the new agreement strengthens Sony’s strategy of investing in emerging markets and enabling “impactful, locally resonant stories” to reach global audiences.
The slate covered by the deal may include original works as well as adaptations drawn from Sony’s library, with production overseen by a jointly approved local producer to support Qatar’s expanding filmmaking ecosystem. Sony will handle global distribution, while both partners will share approval over key creative and financial decisions.
A major component of the partnership is the launch of a writers’ incubation lab, aimed at cultivating emerging Arab screenwriters and reinforcing the region’s creative pipeline. The initiative is expected to play a central role in diversifying the narratives entering the international marketplace.
The announcement was made during Industry Days, hosted by Media City Qatar’s Film Committee in collaboration with the Doha Film Institute. Under the auspices of H.E. Hassan Al Thawadi, the program has quickly become a key regional platform for dialogue on the future of filmmaking, bringing together global leaders in cinema, media, and technology.
At a moment when the Middle East is asserting itself as a significant force in international production, Sony’s partnership in Qatar signals a broader industry realignment. Arab stories rooted in local realities, shaped by regional filmmakers, and supported by global distributors are increasingly poised to reach audiences far beyond their home markets.
