Three years after their first collaboration, American streetwear label Stussy is teaming up for the second time with Moroccan-based collective Artisan Project to craft an exclusive new line of upcycled rugs, carpets, and cushions. Making use of remnant textiles, left-over fabrics, and dead-stock items from previous collections, the ultimate hypebeast brand and eco-conscious initiative are, once again, joining forces to reduce waste while showcasing the North African nation’s ancestral weaving techniques.
Available online in limited quantities and at select Stussy Chapter stores, the two collaborators have called on Ain Leuh Women’s Cooperative to bring their vision to life as they did back at the time of their first partnership. The non-governmental organization, which prides itself on being one of the first weaving unions officially recognized in Morocco, will source wool from the neighboring Atlas mountains and combine it with Stussy’s surplus material to craft new products that not only reflect the country’s rich artisanal heritage but also pay homage to its age-old craftsmanship.
Founded by Palestinian-American textile designer Nina Mohammed, Artisan Project seeks to “honor Moroccan artisanship, improve the lives of craftspeople and their families, and ensure hand-weaving skills continue to thrive,” which they have relentlessly pursued through fair trade principles, community empowerment initiatives, and various collaborations.
Back at the time of their first joint collection, the tripartite collaboration was met with fervent excitement from the world of fashion for its ability to bridge cultural divides and promote social awareness. With the release of this second instalment, we only hope that all parties involved will manage to generate the same amount of hype as they initially had all while continuing to inspire positive change within spaces where wide-scale consumerism often overshadows human connection.
