By the end of the El Gouna Film Festival’s (GFF) eighth edition, everyone was basically running on espresso and nowhere near enough sleep to function properly. This, naturally, made room for some great unintentional comedy. The more people tried to keep it together, the more they started saying things that definitely shouldn’t have been said out loud. Looking back, we’re lowkey glad they did. At times so unhinged they could’ve had their own award category, below, six of the most iconic, unfiltered, and sometimes even concerning things we overheard at GFF this year.
“I’m surprised there’s no matcha booth. I don’t even like it, but it would fit the vibe.”
Said a renowned influencer. We lowkey agree as we’re no matcha fans either, but the aesthetic would’ve made sense.
“Happy Birthday are covering Gouna this year.” (referring to Harper’s Bazaar)
A colleague from Harper’s told us that one. We couldn’t help but laugh.
“I’ve never had a LinkedIn, and don’t think I ever will. I have an IMDb that does the job for me.”
Said a well-known actress, and honestly, it’s kind of a flex.
“I need to buy some faseekh, my friends in Tunisia are begging me to bring some back.”
Said someone we won’t name (or shame), but you know who you are. We’re just sorry your suitcase had to go through that.
“You’re so diaspora. It’s fine, just accept it, you’re fine.”
Someone told me that, as if I don’t already have enough anxieties to deal with.
“Your head is so big. How did your mom even have you?” (pointing at an actor)
Just… lol.
