Chances are, you’ve already downloaded TikTok. Your fascination might have started with mere curiosity, but if you’ve got your head around the app, you’ll know that it’s a pot of comedic gold.
If you still haven’t tried it out yet (Ok boomer), you’ve probably seen a slew of videos watermarked with TikTok’s logo on your Instagram feed, with someone you’ve never seen before dancing along to a song you’ve never heard of. If that describes you, you’re missing out.
Despite its light-hearted content, TikTok is proof of Gen Z’s ability to self-deprecate effortlessly. Yes, the app is home to extremely cringe-worthy posts by teenagers, but it’s also a place where awareness is raised.
The app is where a young teen named Feroza Aziz went viral after posting a makeshift makeup tutorial calling out China’s detention of millions of Muslims in internment camps. It’s also where it’s the norm to use comedy to express social-consciousness. It’s also the norm to post ridiculous Vine-esque videos just for the laughs. Both live in harmony on the app.
So if you find yourself with a bit of time to kill and don’t know how to do it, it’s a good idea to hop on the TikTok bandwagon. These are the accounts and hashtags to follow.
