4 Unusual Winter Destinations to Discover

Winter does not have to be the couch potato season.

Winter is approaching and some of us are starting to go into full hibernation mode. (We are looking at you, friends who cancel plans last minute).

But the season does not have to be so depressing. Doesn’t matter where you live, whether you want to embrace the cold or flee it, we have you covered with some of our favorite, but generally unusual winter destinations that’ll help you fight the winter blues.

Siwa Oasis, Egypt

Located in a deep depression near the border with Libya, this little piece of heaven can fix your sun cravings during the winter. It’s also perfect to recharge and get away from the frenzy of city life. Turn off your phone and enjoy this Berber Egyptian town with its gorgeous mountains and lakes.

Kirkjufell, Iceland

No this isn’t a computer generated picture, this is a real place and you can go there!

This fantastical-like mountain was one of the many shooting locations for Game of Thrones, and this is your chance to live your nordic winter fantasy. You can also visit the nearby picturesque towns like Grundarfjörður.

Tozeur, Tunisia

Another Oasis destination on our list is none other than Tozeur. Located in the south of Tunisia, this town with a rich history and breathtaking sights has a lot to offer. You can discover Chott El Djerid which is the largest salt pan of the Sahara, walk around the old medina and visit the Star Wars filming location in Onk Jemel.

Hallstatt, Austriche

If you are in the mood for a fairytale like winter getaway, this small town in Austria can be the perfect pick for you. Often dubbed “the most instagrammable town in the world”, Hallstatt attracts a huge number of tourists during the winter who come to the town to live their Frozen (yes, the movie) fantasy. Don’t worry, we are not shaming you if you are a Disney adult.

But the town has a lot more to offer than just being the inspiration behind the Disney movie : gorgeous alpine houses, mountains, lakes and the oldest salt mine in the world. If you are looking for a European winter getaway, this is it.
