Record-breaking Netflix series Squid Game is set to return to our screens sooner than anticipated, as announced by Emmy-winning actor Lee Jung-Jae, known for his role as Gi-hun in the show. The South Korean drama, which had viewers on the edge of their seats with its nail-biting suspense and jaw-dropping twists, remains the most-watched program on the American streaming service to this day. And as the release date of its second instalment draws nearer, there are high hopes that the upcoming season will surpass the numbers garnered in its debut in September 2021.
According to an interview with US publication Business Insider, Jung-Jae revealed that Squid Game’s second season will be available to watch from this December onwards. Though the piece of news is yet to have been confirmed by the video-on-demand platform itself, during an alleged Netflix earnings call in April, co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, that the show’s comeback would be slated for the latter half of 2024; a timeframe that appears to corroborate Jung-Jae’s claims.

Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show revolves around a high-stakes survival contest where 456 players vie for a 45.6 billion won prize (approximately $3.3 million) by engaging in a series of childhood games with deadly consequences. Given its almost unparalleled success and critical acclaim, it’s no surprise that expectations are sky-high for its upcoming chapter as it will feature returning stars including, Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo, and Wi Ha-jun alongside Jung-Jae. Additionally, the introduction of fresh faces to the cast, such as Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, and Park Gyu-young, promises to inject new energy into the program’s storyline.
Racking 14 Emmy nominations in 2022, with six wins under its belt, Netflix had built upon its wide-scale popularity by expanding the Squid Game universe with the launch of a reality competition spinoff series, laying the groundwork for this highly-anticipated second season.
