One of Jonathan Anderson’s favorite Studio Ghibli films is Howl’s Moving Castle— He loves it so much that he decided to dedicate an entire Loewe limited-edition collection to Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film. Set to launch globally on Feb. 2, the capsule is the third and final collaboration between the Spanish luxury label and the Japanese animation house, following two highly sought after collections paying homage to Spirited Away and My Neighbor Tontoro.
“The world we are living in needs a counteract: not as an escape, but as a different outlook,” Anderson said in a released statement. “This, to me, is what Hayao Miyazaki’s animated films for Studio Ghibli are about: a commentary on the moment and an alternative to it, always heartfelt, fulfilling, full of fantasy and sentiment.”
Anderson reimagined some of the most recognizable characters and scenes from the animation across ready-to-wear, handbags and accessories. Characters including Sophie, Howl, Markl, Heen, as well as Turnip Head, and the Witch of the Waste, appear hand-drawn and embroidered on Loewe’s most recognizable designs such as the Puzzle, Amazona, and Luna handbags in addition to jumpers, jackets, shirts, and small leather goods like airpod cases and coin pouches.
The film’s mischievous fire demon Calcifer also inspired a brand new scent, with notes of incense, immortelle, patchouli, vetiver, roasted hazelnut, cardamom, and elemi.
Other standout pieces include a pair of drop earrings that resemble the jewelry worn by Howl in the film.
The collection coincides with a new Juergen Teller-shot campaign starring Taylor Russell, Rianne Van Rompaey, Oliver O’Sullivan, Hyunji Shin, and… a sheep.
In the Middle East, the collection will be exclusively available at an immersive pop-up at The Dubai Mall from Feb. 2 to 14. Meanwhile, die hard Studio Ghibli fans who are especially eager to get their hands on the new collection can sign up for a pre-sale happening on Feb. 1 on www.loewe.com.
