Wegz and Marwan Moussa Announce Same-Day Project Releases

365 days in a year and you both had to pick the same one?

Hip-hop fans across the Arab World are in for a treat: two of the genre’s biggest names — Wegz and Marwan Moussa — are set to drop separate projects at the same time. The showdown, reminiscent of when Kanye West and 50 Cent famously released competing albums on the same day back in 2007, has already sparked widespread excitement and curiosity as who to will dominate charts on Aug. 29, the date both bodies of work are expected to hit streaming platforms. And though no retirement ultimatums are on the table this time, the two MCs are steadily setting the stage for one of the most talked-about moments in the region’s rap scene this year.

Alexandria-born rapper Wegz was the first to confirm a release date, announcing that the lead single from his upcoming tape would drop on Aug. 19, followed by the full project ten days later. A day after, Marwan Moussa revealed that his own would also land on Aug. 29, to everyone’s surprise. As of now, it remains unclear whether the overlap was deliberate, but the double release has placed the two rappers in direct competition, raising questions about how it will all play out, especially given their longstanding tensions.

If everything goes ahead as scheduled, both rappers will be notching their second project of the year. Wegz kicked things off in February with TNKR, his first long-form release since 2019. On the other hand, Marwan Moussa dropped The Man Who Lost His Heart in May, maintaining a consistent output that has seen him share a project nearly every year since 2021.

It’s been years now that the two MCs have openly declared their rivalry to each other, trading occasional barbs in lyrics and shots on their social media profiles whenever the situation calls it for it from their end. Only adding more fuel to this ongoing fire, with their simultaneous drops, the two have, once again, given fans the perfect excuse to debate and argue over who deserves Egypt’s rap crown. While we wait to see how things will unfold, one thing’s for sure in the meantime: we’ll all be watching closely.
